El Paso Elite Sod & Turf provides professional tree & shrub planting in El Paso, TX for residential and commercial properties across the El Paso borderland. Tree and shrub planting is the highest-value water-saving move available on an El Paso property, because shade landing on the west wall and the afternoon side of the lawn cuts both your cooling bill and the irrigation demand of everything under it. We plant desert willow, chitalpa, Texas mountain laurel, Afghan pine, honey mesquite, Mexican elder, red yucca, sotol, cenizo and Apache plume alongside sod and xeriscape work, so the whole landscape establishes together. Species choice here is not decorative preference, it is survival. Our soil is alkaline with free lime, our air is dry, our sun is intense at altitude and our winters are cold enough to kill genuinely tropical stock. The plants above are on the list because they handle all of that. Desert willow and chitalpa give fast light shade and a long bloom. Texas mountain laurel is slow, evergreen, and worth the wait for the spring flowers alone. Afghan pine is the reliable evergreen screen here. Honey mesquite is native, tough and gives filtered shade that grass can actually grow under. Red yucca, sotol and cenizo carry structure through winter without asking for anything. Species that struggle in high-pH soil — and there are plenty sold locally that do — will spend a decade looking chlorotic no matter how much iron you throw at them, so we steer around them rather than selling you a problem. Installation technique matters as much as species and matters more in caliche. We probe first, because a planting hole dug into a caliche layer is a bucket, and a bucket in a desert is a drowning hazard for a tree — water goes in, cannot drain, and the roots rot in the one place you would never suspect. Where we hit hardpan we punch through the bottom of the hole or widen substantially to give roots a lateral escape. Then the basics done properly: hole two to three times the width of the root ball and no deeper than the ball, root flare set at or slightly above finished grade, circling roots scored on container stock, backfill with the native soil we removed rather than a pit of imported compost, and three inches of mulch pulled back off the trunk. Planting too deep is the leading cause of slow tree death and it happens constantly on professionally installed jobs. Staking gets used where spring wind genuinely requires it, with broad flexible ties rather than wire through hose, and we come back to remove the straps before they girdle the trunk. Watering instructions come written down, because a new tree wants a deep infrequent soak on its own drip zone and a completely different schedule from the lawn.
With 15+ years of experience, our licensed and insured team brings the right materials and equipment to every job — TifTuf Bermuda, Tifway 419 Bermuda, Celebration Bermuda, Latitude 36 Bermuda, NorthBridge Bermuda, Prairie buffalograss — and backs the work with a written workmanship warranty. Materials, equipment and how we do tree & shrub planting
The difference between tree & shrub planting that lasts and tree & shrub planting that gets redone in three years is almost always preparation and materials, not the finish you see on day one. We work with TifTuf Bermuda, Tifway 419 Bermuda, Celebration Bermuda, Latitude 36 Bermuda, spec them to the job instead of to the invoice, and write the material grades into the free estimate so you know exactly what you are buying.
Every El Paso job runs the same way: site walk and measurements, written scope and fixed price, protection of the surrounding area, then the work itself with a daily clean-up. 15+ years of sod installation work in the El Paso borderland means we have already met whatever your property is going to throw at us — awkward access, older construction, an HOA with opinions.
